Artwork

Here are photographs of some of the paintings I've done in the past three-years; since the spring of 2002.   They are all oil paintings, except for one, which is a fresco.  I don't quite know what to say about them, except I wish I had better photographs and plenty of detail shots.  The paintings take as their subjects a combination of interiors, still-lives, and figures.  I owe a lot to Bonnard, Cezanne, Max Beckmann, Stanley Spencer, Munch, Marsden Hartley, and Balthus -- and to Jim Peters.  I could go on and on listing my influences and admirations, but I won't bore you.

I guess all I'd like to add is that, for me, process is a very important part of making these paintings, and for the most part, each canvas has several versions of the same painting on it, or even is built up of layers of different paintings.  In the same way, the fresco is a process, and it's out of this struggle, between an initial vision, the terrain of the canvas, and the materials and their uses, the artwork comes to life, like the birth of the Python in Ovid.

Leave any comments for me here.
